HISTORY OF FORMATION OF ANNC IN ACNS, THE PREVIOUS ACTIVITIES, CONGRESSES, FUTURE PLANS AND ACTIVITIES.

The 1st ANNC was started in 2010 with full support and encouragement from the 8TH ACNS Organising chairperson Dr. Mohammed Saffari bin Mohammed Haspani (who was the head of Neurosurgical Department, HKL) and the treasurer Dr. Ramesh Narenthiranathan (senior Neurosurgeon, HKL). Both Neurosurgeons always have high respect and trust for Neurosurgical Nurses.  

Working together with Ms. Satiapoorany K. Subramaniam who was then a nursing lecturer attached to National University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur (HUKM), (was attached to Neuro I.C.U, HKL before joining HUKM).

Both of us have great interest in Neurosurgical Nursing and aim to educate the Neurosurgical Nurses, upgrade and discuss about the current and future developments in various neurosurgical nursing specialties. and encourage net–working among all Neurosurgical nurses in the Asian region especially those in the developing countries including nurses from Malaysia. To ensure Neurosurgical Nurses actively involved in internal and external activities held by own / other institutions.

The 1st ANNC was successfully held from 22nd -24th November 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with the congress theme : Neurosurgery For Today and Planning For The Future. The congress consisted symposia, workshop and free papers session with participants from Malaysia, Singapore, India, Indonesia and Thailand.

I was then given more opportunity to organise international events. The 2nd ANNC was successfully held in Istanbul, Turkey from 2-5 September 2012 after approval given by the 9th ACNS Congress President : Prof Mehmet Zileli, and a great effort from the Neurosurgical Nursing Organising committee.

After the 2 successful congresses, the 3rd ANNC which was held from 10-11 September 2014 in Astana, Kazakhstan after approval from Prof. Serik Akshulakov – the President of the 10th ACNS, (eventhough there was language barrier with the Neuro Nurses).

Strong commitment and interest keep us moving forward. The 4th ANNC was held in Surabaya, Indonesia in 9th March 2016, after approval given by Prof. Abdul Hafid Bajamal. The nursing organising committee showed strong interest and commitment, the congress was a great success

The nurses wing continued to grow, the 5th ANNC was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Nurses from developing countries participated the congress.

Due to the COVID-19 global outbreak, and as a result the 13th ACNS / 6th ANNC in 21-24 May 2020, Kazan was cancelled.

There is still a long way…… due to shortage of trained neuro nurses especially from developing countries.

Issues need to be addressed in the future congress, good quality Neurosurgical care to all neurosurgical patients, Neurosurgical nursing innovation and research.

ANNC Foundation will be beneficial to Neurosurgical nurses from developing countries, enable more nurses to attend & participate in international activities.

Online nursing educational activities needed to encourage more nurses to participant and interact with other Neurosurgical nurses from other part of Asian countries.

To establish advance training centre for Neurosurgical nurses from developing countries, to improve knowledge and skill on handling Neurosurgical patients.

Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons (ACNS) Nurses Chapter will definitely helpful as suggested Prof Yoko Kato to promote, upgrade and improve nursing standard, knowledge and skill on Neurosurgical Nursing, net-working, Global team nursing, exchange ideas and encourage nurses to move forward nationally and internationally to take part in various Neurosurgical / Neurosciences congress / conference / workshop.

I sincerely hope that all Neurosurgical Nursing leaders will come forward and work together as a family to improve the standards of Neurosurgical Nursing in Asian countries.
